S.G.S. Government Institute of Advanced Study in Education (S.G.S. G.I.A.S.E.), located in the vibrant city of Rajahmundry, is one of India's most historic and prestigious teacher training institutions. Established in 1883, our institute has been at the forefront of shaping educators, fostering innovation, and enriching communities through education.

Our History: A Journey of Transformation and Excellence

Founding Years: Establishment of Elementary Normal School (1883)

The journey began in 1883 with the establishment of the Elementary Normal School in Rajahmundry. It was founded to address the pressing need for trained teachers in Telugu-speaking regions, laying the foundation for quality education in Andhra Pradesh.

Advancement to Secondary Normal School (1887)

Recognizing the growing demand for advanced teacher training, the institute was upgraded to a Secondary Normal School in 1887. This milestone marked its evolution into a center for excellence in training educators for higher-level teaching roles.

Introduction of Training College and Licentiate in Teaching (L.T.) Course (1894)

In 1894, the institute transitioned into a Training College, offering the prestigious Licentiate in Teaching (L.T.) course. At that time, it was one of only two institutions in India to provide such advanced training.

Evolution into Bachelor of Teaching (B.T.) Program (1928)

The institute continued to grow in stature, replacing the L.T. course with the Bachelor of Teaching (B.T.) program in 1928. This move further enhanced the scope and quality of teacher education, preparing educators for a rapidly changing world.

Platinum Jubilee Celebration (1956)

In 1956, the institute celebrated its Platinum Jubilee, marking 75 years of dedication to teacher education. This grand occasion highlighted its achievements and contributions to the educational landscape of India.

Transformation into G.I.A.S.E. (1959)

Following the recommendations of the Kothari Commission, the institute was elevated to the Government Institute of Advanced Study in Education in 1959. This transformation expanded its focus beyond teacher training to include:

• Pre-service and In-service Teacher Training.

• Research and Development in Education.

• Innovative Teaching Methodologies.
